‘Homeless Hairstyle’ Causes Outrage

A hairdressers’ sign is causing raised eyebrows with the range of styles it offers, reports Suffolk News.

Bimbo’s Hair, in St John’s Street, Bury St Edmunds, has placed the A-board outside on the pavement saying the salon offers a range of three styles: ‘Straight, Wavy and Homeless’. But the sign has sparked debate about what ‘Homeless’ hair actually means. Some critics have branded the sign ‘cruel’ and ‘offensive’ to the homeless community.

Salon boss Dayna Davitt meanwhile has apologised if the sign has been misinterpreted saying: “the delivery of humour can sometimes be unclear”. Writer, and town resident, Nicola Miller, said: “I’d love to know what they mean by ‘homeless hair’ and if they considered the feelings of the homeless people who occasionally walk past their salon? The sign feels casually and needlessly cruel.” Other people have joined the debate on social media calling the sign ‘odd’, ‘offensive’, ‘awful’ and ‘the joke sucks’.

Bimbo’s Hair made headlines last year when they banned ‘sex’ from the salon with pricing on a gender-neutral basis. Owner, Dayna Davitt, said: “First and foremost, we’d like to clarify that the sign was intended to be tongue in cheek and was never meant to cause offense. We apologise if it was interpreted differently, and we assure you that we always aim to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our customers. We understand that the context and delivery of humour can sometimes be unclear, and it is not our intention to offend anyone.”

She added: “Going forward, we will be mindful of the impact our signage has on our community and make sure that our messaging is clear and in good taste. We appreciate your feedback and hope to continue serving you and our community with the highest level of respect and care.”
